The Skyway system in Minneapolis is confusing... very very confusing. Now imagine trying to find your way around without being able to see! Good luck. Help us answer the the questions "How might we help people navigate the skyways in a multi-sensory way?" Using recent advances in geo-location and proximity based technology (see the "Blue Bean" from Punch Through Labs) we can create an app (or other technology) that ...more »
The interactive park map is a fantastic application and it would be great to build upon it to give users more search capabilities. A few enhancements could include the following:
1. Implement additional search capabilities such as the ability to search for activities (ie: ice skating rinks).
2. Add typeahead to the search bar.
3. Allow users to select their location or a location on the map.
Let's help our clients find jobs in convenient locations. Build an app that posts the name of companies, field of work, major job titles, and the number of open positions for job seekers on a map of Hennepin County.
App would tell a parent/caretaker where nearby they can have early childhood screenings for kids completed.
We would like to create a digital tool for residents of North Minneapolis to search for and participate in Digital Innovation endeavors. Currently, offerings are disperate and the community is in need a central rallying point from which work to close the digital divide.
Set up a process to map/identify locations with AEDs. It could be done as a contest where people could form teams and win "badges" or points for how many they submit. Or, businesses could add their own as they add devices. Something similar was done out on the east coast somewhere (Philly or New York maybe?).
Add new additional details to the county's parcels dataset. First and foremost: provide a count of dwelling units (housing units) associated with each parcel. The current structure of the parcels dataset can easily accommodate this new information.
Change street lights to to use LEDs using lunar resonance to brighten or dim depending on the moonlight. (see Civil Twilight's site: http://www.civiltwilightcollective.com/lunar1.htm) This would save energy and darken the "white night" skies so we could see the stars.
I'm working the reception desk. Someone asked me a question in Laotian? Spanish? Russian? Help! I don't speak those languages. "ding!" I send out an SOS on my language apps. Create an app where you can search for public art at Hennepin County Library by location, artist, medium.
Buses are great, except when they are early or really late, or there's a detour you didn't realize was in effect. Same for the lightrail, although it doesn't experience time problems as much. What would be really helpful is an app that has all the stops for all the public transportation, what buses stop there (with the option to see the route right there on the map), and most importantly, where the bus is RIGHT NOW. ...more »
Individual apps meeting various needs are nice, but what if we combined them into one main platform so everyone knew where to go to find things like recycling info, events at libraries, business resources, community engagement events, etc. etc.
Public discussions of policy decisions, such as allowing high density developments, developing light rail, or building subsidizes housing are premised on assumptions about the effects on housing prices and taxation. We need open data about the historical value and taxes at the parcel level.
Create an app which shows reported potholes on a map and has an audio alert system. Users can report potholes with the app or through the existing reporting page online and could turn off the alert if they're already aware of the pothole. Minneapolis has a city service reporting app, perhaps we could use some of their reported information on potholes?
Anyone that has Hennepin County data in a KML, KMZ or GPX file, can display that file with Gmap4. Doing so lets you see that data with the familiar Google maps interface together with features that include: 1. Mobile devices display a touch-friendly interface. Desktops/laptops display a mouse interface. 2. Geolocation (on mobile devices) with a symbol that follows you as you move. 3. Display a USNG grid. (Federal ...more »
