Accessibility Guidelines for Maps

Web maps are an integral part of a lot of our community's civic tech projects, and accessibility also is a core value of civic technology. Unfortunately, it can be tricky to navigate what exactly it means to make "accessible maps".

The goal of this project is to generate a set of guidelines/ guiding questions, examples, and code snippets that civic tech groups can use in their mapping projects. Eventually, we would... more »

LiveCyle Forms with GeoLocation

Currently, Hennepin County owns Adobe LiveCycle. This allows for numerous possibilities that could be incorporated into ideas. The idea I'd like to propose specifically for this event, is to start building some forms that have geolocation embedded into the form that would then determine which service center or provider receives the form or application. (Based on location upon submission.) Could either make the submission... more »

Add additional search capabilities to the Park Interactive Map

The interactive park map is a fantastic application and it would be great to build upon it to give users more search capabilities. A few enhancements could include the following:

1. Implement additional search capabilities such as the ability to search for activities (ie: ice skating rinks).

2. Add typeahead to the search bar.

3. Allow users to select their location or a location on the map.

Report sidewalk conditions accessibility issues

Each winter our HC sidewalk system turns treacherous for walkers and insurmountable for people in wheel chairs, with strollers, etc. We need an app to report homeowners, businesses, etc., that are not keeping their sidewalks clear.

App would include maps of hot spots, so that users would know what areas they should avoid, and what areas are free of obstacles, as well as allow users to report precise location and condition... more »

Human Services Basic Needs Locator

Idea to create an application that allows a user to select what basic services they may need assistance with (food stamps, shelter, safe house, etc.) and then the nearest location to obtain that service (using both geolocation and geofencing). For example, if someone needed assistance with obtaining food stamps, the app can either direct the user to the nearest government building to obtain assistance completing an application... more »

Report bike and pedestrian trail issues

Create an app or tool that bikers and pedestrians can use to report any maintenance or trail issues that they find. Ideally it would include the GPS coordinates and allow them to take a picture of the problem. Combining this functionality with some of the other bike/ped ideas submitted (ie the interactive map) would be really sweet!

Pothole Alert

Create an app which shows reported potholes on a map and has an audio alert system. Users can report potholes with the app or through the existing reporting page online and could turn off the alert if they're already aware of the pothole. Minneapolis has a city service reporting app, perhaps we could use some of their reported information on potholes?

Platform for visual tours

Suppose a government org or a private group wanted to create a photo tour for a particular theme, such as the murals of South Minneapolis, or historic buildings in NE, or homes of famous people. Lets build/recommend a platform that groups could use and then donate the tour to a central public website that locals and tourists could access. OpenStreetMaps? ArcGIS?

Real-Time Public Transit App

Buses are great, except when they are early or really late, or there's a detour you didn't realize was in effect. Same for the lightrail, although it doesn't experience time problems as much.

What would be really helpful is an app that has all the stops for all the public transportation, what buses stop there (with the option to see the route right there on the map), and most importantly, where the bus is RIGHT NOW.... more »
