Project Idea

Got a community issue you want to build a tool for? Or an idea for a technology you want to deploy in Hennepin County?

Project Idea

Real-Time Public Transit App

Buses are great, except when they are early or really late, or there's a detour you didn't realize was in effect. Same for the lightrail, although it doesn't experience time problems as much. What would be really helpful is an app that has all the stops for all the public transportation, what buses stop there (with the option to see the route right there on the map), and most importantly, where the bus is RIGHT NOW.... more »

LiveCyle Forms with GeoLocation

Currently, Hennepin County owns Adobe LiveCycle. This allows for numerous possibilities that could be incorporated into ideas. The idea I'd like to propose specifically for this event, is to start building some forms that have geolocation embedded into the form that would then determine which service center or provider receives the form or application. (Based on location upon submission.) Could either make the submission... more »

One platform - lots of community info!

Individual apps meeting various needs are nice, but what if we combined them into one main platform so everyone knew where to go to find things like recycling info, events at libraries, business resources, community engagement events, etc. etc.

Use Gmap4 to display Hennepin County data

Anyone that has Hennepin County data in a KML, KMZ or GPX file, can display that file with Gmap4. Doing so lets you see that data with the familiar Google maps interface together with features that include: 1. Mobile devices display a touch-friendly interface. Desktops/laptops display a mouse interface. 2. Geolocation (on mobile devices) with a symbol that follows you as you move. 3. Display a USNG grid. (Federal... more »

Report sidewalk conditions accessibility issues

Each winter our HC sidewalk system turns treacherous for walkers and insurmountable for people in wheel chairs, with strollers, etc. We need an app to report homeowners, businesses, etc., that are not keeping their sidewalks clear. App would include maps of hot spots, so that users would know what areas they should avoid, and what areas are free of obstacles, as well as allow users to report precise location and condition... more »

Make an interactive Parking Meter map for Mpls

These two maps are begging for an interactive version that can be queried, zoom/pan, etc: http://www.mplsparking.com/Includes/CurrentMeterMap.pdf http://www.mplsparking.com/Includes/multi_space_map.pdf Many times I have squinted at these maps when planning a drive to the Guthrie or Convention Center, trying to ascertain basic parking meter info: hourly rate, hours of enforcement, and time limit. Make it easier for someone... more »

Human Services Basic Needs Locator

Idea to create an application that allows a user to select what basic services they may need assistance with (food stamps, shelter, safe house, etc.) and then the nearest location to obtain that service (using both geolocation and geofencing). For example, if someone needed assistance with obtaining food stamps, the app can either direct the user to the nearest government building to obtain assistance completing an application... more »

Platform for visual tours

Suppose a government org or a private group wanted to create a photo tour for a particular theme, such as the murals of South Minneapolis, or historic buildings in NE, or homes of famous people. Lets build/recommend a platform that groups could use and then donate the tour to a central public website that locals and tourists could access. OpenStreetMaps? ArcGIS?

Help market responsive design!

The State of Minnesota has created a pretty comprehensive public resource for project leaders, designers, developers and anyone else involved in mobile accessibility at http://innovation.mn.gov/mobileguide as a how-to for creating responsive content and apps. As with any new tech, the guide will become dated if it's not kept current. Help us turn this "fixed" resource into a dynamic one by creating a model for maintaining... more »

Accessibility Barrier Locator and Input Application

Create an app that would allow users to input barriers to accessibility by storing the GPS location along with a description and optional photos. These barriers would appear on a map for others to use in planning routes and would also be automatically sent to the appropriate ADA Coordinator.

ACCESSIBLE SKYWAYS!

The Skyway system in Minneapolis is confusing... very very confusing. Now imagine trying to find your way around without being able to see! Good luck. Help us answer the the questions "How might we help people navigate the skyways in a multi-sensory way?" Using recent advances in geo-location and proximity based technology (see the "Blue Bean" from Punch Through Labs) we can create an app (or other technology) that... more »

Map AED Locations

Set up a process to map/identify locations with AEDs. It could be done as a contest where people could form teams and win "badges" or points for how many they submit. Or, businesses could add their own as they add devices. Something similar was done out on the east coast somewhere (Philly or New York maybe?).
